U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice reiterated here on Friday that she hopes for an opportunity to visit Libya which used to be strongly opposed to the United States.
"I actually look forward to the opportunity to go to Libya. I think it will be an important step," Rice told a year-end press conference. She did not give a date.
Rice said on the U.S.-funded Radio Sawa in July that she hoped for travel to Libya soon. "Libya made an important strategic decision to get rid of its weapons of mass destruction," Rice said.
"As a result, it has put itself on a path that is leading to investment in Libya by western companies, which could not invest there before. I know that American companies are very interested in working in Libya." she said.
U.S.-Libya relations have markedly improved since Libya gave up weapons of mass destruction in 2003.
The United States announced last year a full normalization of ties, lifting Libya from a State Department list of state sponsors of terrorism and raising diplomatic relations to the level of ambassadors. Source:Xinhua
