Chile suffered two small earthquakes on Tuesday which caused alarm, but no serious damage, in the northern cities of Iquique and Arica, in the Tarapaca region, the Regional Emergency Office said.
The more serious of the two, registering 5.8 degrees on the Richter scale, was at 1:21 p.m. local time (1621 GMT) and lasted 40 seconds. Its epicenter was 150 km northeast of Iquique, close to the Bolivia border and 78.2 km deep.
The office said that there were no injuries although in rural areas like Huara some walls had collapsed. Highway 45 which goes to Camina suffered no damage.
A weaker quake, registering 4.9 degrees Richter, hit at 9:15 a.m. (1215 GMT). That quake was 75 km north of Antofagasta and 50 km deep.
On Nov. 14, Chile suffered a 7.7 degree quake which made 15,000people homeless mostly in Tocopilla, Quillagua and Santa Elena, all in northern Chile.
