A magnitude 6.5 earthquake rattled Alaska's Aleutian Islands in the northern Pacific on Wednesday, but did not immediately trigger a tsunami warning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The strong quake was detected at 1:04 p.m. local time southeast

of Nikolaski, a village of 31 people about 1,500 kilometers southwest of Anchorage, with the epic center about 33 kilometers deep in the Pacific, the agency said.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said the quake

did not generate a tsunami and no warning or watch was put into effect.
