A fire in a prison in Brazil left eight inmates dead, said the civil police on Wednesday.
The fire, on Tuesday night in a prison in Rio Piracicaba city, 127 km east of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais' state capital, was allegedly started by inmates inside their prison cell, said the police, noting the prison guards had ordered the prisoners to turn it off but was refused by the latter.
The flames then caught the wooden beds and cell door on fire. Eight prisoners died due to the heavy smoke caused by the burning mattresses.
The prison itself also suffered severe damages, and the authorities had to transfer half of the inmates to nearby Joao Monlevade city's public jail, while the other half were lodged in another local jail. Source: Xinhua
