More than 100 people died in traffic accidents or murders in Brazil, Guatemala, Paraguay and the Dominican Republic over the New Year's holiday, according to reports reaching here Wednesday.
The Brazilian Traffic Police reported on Wednesday that 99 people died and 1,276 others were injured in traffic accidents in the country from Dec. 28, 2007, to Jan. 1.
Meanwhile, at least 33 people were killed in violence in Guatemala during the year-end celebrations, according to police.
Paraguayan officials said that 21 people died in traffic accidents or murders during the festivities in that South American country.
Meanwhile, Christmas and New Year celebrations in the Dominican Republic left 35 dead and 538 others injured. Most of the casualties were caused by traffic accidents, said the Caribbean country's Emergency Operations Center on Wednesday.
