An escaped U.S. prisoner was shot dead by police on Wednesday afternoon after he overpowered guards, stoled a pair of guns and carjacked a motorist in a Maryland hospital, according to media reports.
The prisoner was killed during shootout with police when caught up in a cemetery on Suitland Road, outside of Washington.
"It started with him firing at our officers first," Henry Tippett, a spokesman for the Prince George County police said. "The officers returned fire and struck him. But it was the suspect who fired the first shots."
The prisoner, identified as Kelvin Poke, 45, was convicted of kidnapping and carjacking. He said he had chest pains when managing to break free from hospital earlier Wednesday.
It was the second time a prisoner had escaped from Laurel Regional Hospital since November.
