President George W. Bush has been "very interested" in politics of the presidential primaries and caucuses started from Iowa, the White House said on Thursday.
Bush, however, "is not spending a lot of time on that," spokeswoman Dana Perino said on a briefing.
Iowan Democratic caucuses are set to start at 6:30 p.m. CST (7:30 EST, 0030 GMT), and Republicans will begin 30 minutes later.
Due to Republicans' simpler procedure, their caucuses results could be out around 8:00 p.m. CST (9:00 EST, 0200 GMT) but Democratic results might be later.
"Look, obviously it's a very exciting time for America as they look to all the choices that they have for who is running for president," Perino said.
"And the president is watching it as he has been over the past little while, as an observer, as somebody who is obviously very interested in politics. But he's not spending a lot of time on that," she added.
Bush won Iowa Republican caucuses 41 percent to 30 percent for billionaire publisher Steve Forbes in 2000 when he launched the first bid for the White House. He was unopposed for renomination in 2004.
