U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urged Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki on Thursday to take peaceful measures to end violence that has erupted after allegations of electoral fraud in Kibaki's re-election, the State Department said.

In their telephone talks, Rice encouraged Kibaki and Kenya's opposition leader Raila Odinga to work together to find a political solution to put an end to violence in the country, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.

Also on Thursday, Rice discussed by telephone with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana about political crisis in Kenya, McCormack said.

Rice spoke with Odinga on Wednesday. Her telephone talks with Kibaki and Solana came as Kenya is in tense situation since election officials declared on Sunday that Kibaki had won the narrow Dec. 27 vote and the president was sworn in for a second term.

It was reported that political disputes have degenerated into ethnic violent conflicts that have claimed lives of about 300 people, and turned hundreds of thousands of people displaced.
