A two-motor aircraft with 14 passengers and two crew members aboard disappeared on Friday at sea after lifting off from Los Rosques, Venezuelan archipelago, Civil Protection director general Antonio Rivero reported.

The whereabouts of the passengers and aircraft have been unknown since the crew members sent an emergency alert to aeronautic officials reporting a failure in both their motors.

Rivero told Globovision media network that emergency helicopters and boats were sent six miles from the Caribbean archipelago of Los Roques to seek them.

According to local media reports the LET-410 aircraft with license plate number YV-2081, belonging to Transaven enterprise, lifted off at 9:40 a.m. local time (13:40 GMT) from Los Roques airport.
