A quake measuring 5.9 on Richter scale shook northern Chile on Saturday morning, but no casualties or damages were reported.

The earthquake hit at 4:29 a.m. local time (1529 TMT), reported the earthquake monitoring network of University of Chile.

The epicenter of earthquake was 46 km west of San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile. The tremor could also be felt in Tocopilla, Calama, Antofagasta and other cities of Chile.

A strong quake of 7.7 magnitude hit the same area on Nov.14 last year, killing two and injuring tens of thousands of others.

Since Dec. 15, some 30 quakes with magnitude of above four had hit the country's central and northern areas, triggering landslides and causing panic among people.
