Two Canadian soldiers died in southern Afghanistan when their armored vehicle rolled over during a military operation, the Canadian Defence Ministry said on Monday.
Both soldiers were killed on Sunday evening, when their Light Armored Vehicle rolled over, during a "tactical move across difficult terrain", the defense ministry said in a press release.
"This incident was not the result of enemy activity." it added. The incident occurred in Nalgham, in the Zhari District, 40 km South-West of Kandahar City during a joint operation conducted by the International Security Assistance Force and Afghan National Security Forces.
One of the killed soldiers has been identified as Cpl. Eric Labbe, 31, of the Royal 22nd Regiment, while the identity of the second soldier is being withheld at the request of the family, the press release said.
The deaths come one week after a roadside bomb blast claimed the life of Gunner Jonathan Dion, 27, as he traveled to Kandahar Airfield on the New Year's Eve.
Canada has 2,500 soldiers operating in southern Afghanistan as part of the NATO mission. Since the military operations began in 2002, 76 Canadian soldiers and one diplomat have died in the country. Source:Xinhua
