Construction workers protesting against the killing of one of their colleagues clashed with police in Panama City Wednesday.
According to Construction Workers Labour Union leader Saul Mendez, a protesting worker was shot on the back and killed by police in Colon city Monday.
"We demand serious answers for this crime," said Mendez.
Workers at many construction sites started protesting at 06:00 local time (1100 GMT) Wednesday over high living costs and insecure working conditions.
The protestors blocked streets and burned tires, while police launched tear gas grenades, triggering clashes at several sites in the city. So far there are no reports of any injuries as a result of Wednesday's rioting.
Local radio networks reported that protesting workers blocked streets in the cities of Cocle, San Carlos and David. In Colon city, 62 km northwest of the capital, clashes between police and workers also occurred.
Two workers were killed by police in 2007, and the culprits went unpunished, said Mendez.
The government said it would ensure free flow of traffic for people not involved in the rioting.
