Paraguayan officials are investigating Friday a possible assassination attempt against President Nicanor Duarte with a water bottle containing muriatic acid.
The incident occurred early Thursday in the presidential office of the Armed Forces, where Duarte was meeting military chiefs.
The president suffered only minor irritations of mouth and tonsils after quickly spitting out the water tainted with hydrochloric acid, Carmelo Gonzalez Doldan, Duarte's personal physician, was quoted by Paraguayan daily ABC Color as saying.
Paraguayan Defense Minister Nelson Mora had opened the bottle and served the content in Duarte's glass, said Gonzalez.
Mora also drank the liquid and immediately spit it out.
Laboratory tests revealed that the water contained muriatic acid, said Gonzalez.
Officials have withheld the name of a waiter who was allegedly placed the water bottle with muriatic acid on the table during the meeting.
Of the 12 water bottles, just the one served to Duarte had muriatic acid, said Gonzalez. Source:Xinhua
