Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Friday started a trip to Antarctica to mark the 25th anniversary of Brazil's presence on the continent.
The president's jet landed Friday evening in the Chilean city of Punta Arenas, the southernmost city on Earth, where the president will take a Hercules plane of Brazilian Air Force together with his wife and son for the Brazilian foundation in Antarctica.
Lula will be the second Brazilian president to visit King George Island, where the Comandante Ferraz base is located. Formerpresident Fernando Collor de Mello traveled to the base in 1991.
Twenty-three people will accompany the president on the trip, including Defense Minister Nelson Jobim, Minister of Communications Franklin Martins and Minister of Science and Technology Sergio Rezende.
The trip is subject to changes in view of the extremely unstable weather conditions on the continent, said Rear Admiral Dilermando Ribeiro Lima, secretary of Brazil's Joint Ministerial Committee for Sea Resources.
