Guatemala's colonel Chupina Barahona, who is wanted by Spanish courts on charges of genocide, torture and terrorism, died Sunday in Guatemala City of heart problems, according to news reaching here.
Chupina's nephew, Francisco Sagastume, told reporters in Guatemala City that the 86-year-old colonel had died at his home in Boca del Monte, on the city's outskirts. The colonel had long suffered from cardiac and gastro-intestinal problems, Sagastume said.
Chupina was the director of the Guatemalan National Police (PNG) during the rule of Romeo Lucas Garcia, Guatemala's president from 1978 to 1982. The PNG has been disbanded and Garcia died in Venezuela in May 2006. Source: Xinhua
