Police killed one suspect and wounded another in a shootout in northeast Los Angeles on Thursday, authorities said.
The shootout began shortly after noon when officers attempted to make a traffic stop for violation in a neighborhood densely packed with apartments, small homes and businesses, police said.
One of the suspects jumped out of a car and began firing on officers with an AK-47 rifle, authorities said.
Police returned fired, killing the suspect and wounding another. No police officer was injured in the attack.
Two other suspects remained at large, with one believed to be barricaded inside an apartment building in a neighborhood now surrounded by police. A fourth suspect apparently fled the area in a vehicle, officials said.
"One of the suspects opened fire on the officers with an AK-47," said Cmdr. Andrew Smith, supervisor of the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Bureau.
Police said they had recovered at least one handgun at the scene, in addition to the assault weapon.
Earlier, police officials said that people in two vehicles had fired at each other while driving, but authorities later said that all four suspects were traveling in the same car.
