Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez expressed on Friday his condolence to the families of the victims in a Thursday air crash in southwestern province of Merida.
"My heart feels the sorrow. Venezuela is mourning the 46 deceased people, some publicly known. Hopefully these kind of things do not happen again," said Chavez at a ceremony inaugurating the Metropolitan Public Health System.
An ATR42-300 twin-engine aircraft belonging to Santa Barbara Airlines crashed 30 minutes after taking off at 17:30 local time (2010 GMT) from Alberto Carnevalli airport in Merida city as it was heading toward Caracas's Simon Bolivar national airport.
Venezuelan Civil Protection office (PC) informed the public on Thursday about the disappearance of a commercial aircraft in the country's Andean region.
Some 10 hours after the disappearance, PC's national director Antonio Rivero said they found the wreckage of the missing plane, and confirmed all the 46 people aboard died in the accident.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, the director said.
