Uruguayan police have arrested 11 people, including nine foreigners, in connection with drug trafficking and seized 142 kg of cocaine, officials said on Friday.
The operation, called "Painted Birds," was carried out in the central western town of Dolores and Montevideo. Six Mexicans, three Bolivians and two Uruguayans were arrested.
The operation began Thursday night in a rural establishment near Dolores when a small aircraft from Santa Cruz, Bolivia landed with the drug unloaded into a van.
Anti-drug police followed the van to Montevideo, where they seized it on early Friday, and another group arrested the gang's members in Dolores.
The drug was allegedly bound for Mexico and Europe and was going to be shipped in meat and hake containers, Uruguayan Interior Ministry officials said at a news conference.
Interior Minister Daisy Tourne said Uruguay would continue the battle against drugs. "This is one more operation in the process to fight drug trafficking."
