The U.S. Geological Survey said two mild earthquakes hit a desert area straddling the United States and Mexico on Friday morning. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage on the U.S. side.

The first quake, with an magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale, struck near the border town of Mexicali at 11:31 local time (1931GMT) and was followed by a second quake measured at 4.4 within minutes.

It is the second time this week that the border region has been shaken. The previous quake, measured at 5.0, stuck on Tuesday and there was no report of injury either.
