U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, disappointed by increasing violence in Kenya, called on Tuesday for a swift resolution to political crisis in the East African country.
"While some progress has been made, I am disappointed by the failure of leadership necessary to resolve all the remaining issues," Rice said in a statement.
"There can be no excuse for further delay. There can also be noex cuse for violence, and those responsible must be held accountable," Rice said after Kenya's main opposition leaders threatened to hold nationwide protests if a compromise at the ongoing talks aimed at defusing tension in Kenya was not reached by Thursday.
"We are exploring a wide range of possible actions. We will draw our own conclusions about who is responsible for lack of progress and take necessary steps."
"We will also exert leadership with the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, and others to ensure that the political solution the Kenyan people deserve is achieved," Rice said.
Last week, Rice met with Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga in Nairobi where she told the two leaders that there be no violence and that there ought to be a power sharing agreement.
