Eight people died and five others were injured after a small Chilean police aircraft crashed here on Wednesday, officials reported.

A woman and her son practicing sports and six people aboard the aircraft died in the accident, while five other people doing exercise were injured, two of them seriously.

The aircraft, circulating with two carabineer officials and four aviation mechanical students, crashed against a soccer field in which some 14 people were exercising, including the deceased woman and her son.

The accident zone is a residential sector in Santiago some meters away from the Tobalaba airport and the soccer field is inside the airport's surrounding installations.

According to airport sources, the aircraft lifted off at 09:45 local time (12:45 GMT) to carry out a local instructional flight in an authorized zone.

The control tower lost touch of the Cessna 210 CC-KKU airplane three minutes after lift off.

According to witnesses quoted by the local media "the aircraft wanted to land and crashed."

Erazo said "the president has asked us to rexpress condolences to the victims of this accident."
