Brazil welcomes the decision by the United Nations to extend the mandate of the UN Integrated Mission (UNMIT) in East Timor, Brazilian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.
According to a UN Security Council resolution adopted on Monday, UNMIT will stay in the Asian country until Feb. 26, 2009.
The Brazilian ministry said in a statement that the UN resolution was "an important reinforcement of the commitment of the international community to East Timor."
"Brazil is fully committed to the development and the long-term stability of East Timor," said the document, stressing that the country favors UN's permanence in East Timor during the necessary period to "build a sovereign state."
In the statement, Brazil reaffirms its commitment to continuing collaboration with a "sovereign, stable, democratic, safe and prosperous Timorese State" and condemned the assassination attempts waged on East Timor's President Jose Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao on Feb. 11.
On Feb. 22, Brazil favored extension of the UNMIT in the UN, highlighting the progress achieved in the East Timorese democracy and in the country's reconciliation.
