The United Nations on Friday urged the rebel Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) to continue to free hostages unilaterally.
The UN asked the FARC in a communique to liberate sick people such as Colombia's former rightwing presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt and colonel Luis Mendieta.
"We call that these unilateral actions continue and speed up the humanitarian liberation of seriously ill people," the communique added.
The FARC liberated four former Colombian legislators on Wednesday and announced the end of unilateral liberations insisting that the Colombian government demilitarize two municipalities to begin peace talks.
The UN celebrated the FARC's unilateral six liberations so far in 2008 with the help of the Venezuelan government's voluntary negotiations.
The UN expressed its willingness to support any effort in favor of those victims of Colombia's internal armed conflict.
According to the released hostages, the hostages held by the FARC in the jungle are sick, demoralized and in constant danger of being killed amidst armed rescue attempts. Source: Xinhua
