U.S. President George W. Bush has not given up the goal on reaching a Middle East peace deal by the end of this year, U.S. National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said Monday.
When asked if Bush has given up the goal, Johndroe said, "No, absolutely not. We're going to keep on pursuing it."
"It is in the best interest of the Palestinian people, it's in the best interest of the Israeli people, it's in the best interest of the people in the region and the whole wide world, so we've got to keep after it," Johndroe said.
The comments came after a fresh round of violence between the militant Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip that has left over 100Palestinians dead since Wednesday.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbbas announced on Sunday that Palestine suspended peace talks with Israel.
The United States has called for an end to the deadly violence and a resumption of peace talks.
The United States hosted the Middle East peace conference in Annapolis, Maryland in November last year, when Israeli and Palestinian leaders agreed to reach a peace deal by the end of this year.
