The United States said Monday it expects Russia's president-elect Dmitry Medvedev to run the country according to Russia's constitution as the incumbent President Vladimir Putin will become the next prime minister.
"I expect that President Medvedev will be president of Russia ...as he's indicated, he will name President Putin his prime minister, that he will fulfill those duties," State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said.
"The Russian system has a pretty clear delineation of responsibilities between the president and prime minister. Until proven otherwise, I think we'll expect that those officeholders will carry out their duties and responsibilities in accordance with the constitution," Casey said.
Dmitry Medvedev, 42, won by landslide in Russia's presidential vote on Sunday, according to official preliminary results and exit polls.
The mild-looking former law professor and senior cabinet member is sure to replace incumbent President Vladimir Putin as the country's third president.
