Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva proposed on Tuesday to create a South-American Council of Defense to mediate conflicts in the region, reported the official Agencia Brasil.
"Brazil needs to propose to create in the continent a South-American Council of Defense and Brazil can represent this council to the Security Council (of the United Nations)", said Lula in a speech pronounced to the inauguration of new installations of the agency Embrapa monitoramento por Satelite, in Campinas, in the state of Sao Paulo.
According to Lula, South America won't have enough power in multilateral negotiations if only one or two countries represent the region in the Security Council by the system of rotation.
This proposal about the creation of a South-American Council of Defense was put forward by Brazil's Defense Minister Nelson Jobim, reported Agencia Brasil.
In his speech, Lula didn't mention the current diplomatic crisis between Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela.
