U.S. President George W. Bush nominated James Cunningham to be U.S. ambassador to Israel, according to a statement of the White House released on Wednesday.

Cunningham currently serves as Consul General of the United States in Kong Kong. Prior to this, Cunningham has served as deputy U.S. representative to the United Nations and deputy chief of mission in Rome, the statement said.

Cunningham's nomination will have to be approved by the U.S. Senate. If confirmed, he will be the third ambassador to Israel during the Bush administration.
