U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will visit Brazil and Chile next week for talks on economic issues, State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said Thursday.
Rice will visit Brazil on March 13 and meet with President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva and Foreign Minister Celso Amorim on biofuels cooperation and other issues, Casey said.
Rice will then visit Chile and hold talks with Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and Foreign Minister Alejandro Foxley on trade and other issues, Casey said.
Moreover, Rice will likely discuss the tense situation between Colombia and Ecuador, Casey said, adding that the visit was planned before the crisis erupted.
Colombia bombed and dispatched troops into Ecuador in a weekend raid that killed a Colombian rebel leader in his jungle camp.
The U.S. government has expressed support for the Colombian action. However, countries including Brazil and Venezuela have condemned the raid by Colombia, which has been a key U.S. ally in South America. Source:Xinhua
