Mexican troops killed six bandits in a recent clash with a group of armed suspects in the northern city of Chihuahua, the Defense Ministry said Sunday in a statement.

The army last Friday night sent a group of soldiers to Chihuahua, after a local resident reported to the military the presence of a gang of armed bandits in the city, the statement said.

The bandits started shooting at the troops who then returned fire, killing six suspects. Three bandits were arrested.

One soldier was killed and three others were injured during the exchange of fire, the statement said.

The Defense Ministry said the army would enhance measures to crack down on drug rings and groups of organized crime.
