Gilmar Mendes was elected president of Brazil's Federal Supreme Court on Wednesday for a two-year term.
Mendes will replace Ellen Gracie Northfleet, the first female president of the supreme court in Brazilian history.
Mendes, who was the vice presidency of the institution, was elected by a landslide of nine votes to one. He will take office on April 23.
Mendes entered the supreme court as the last justice nominated by Brazil's former President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, who governed the country from 1995 to 2002.
