The United States is ready to cooperate on regional security, said visiting State Secretary Condoleezza Rice in Brasilia on Thursday.

"We have to be concerned about the safety and well-being of countries in the region, that they should not be subject to terrorist activities or terrorist attacks that are either within their borders or beyond their borders," Rice told a press conference after her meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and her Brazilian counterpart Celso Amorim.

Rice also said that her country was proud of its partnership with the Colombian government in the combat against drug trafficking, but declined to criticize Venezuela and Ecuador.

These three Latin-American countries just went through a diplomatic crisis caused by a recent raid of Colombian government forces on the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia rebels on Ecuadorian territory.

"The United States doesn't have enemies -- permanent enemies. What we have is the effort to work well with any state that is acting responsibly on matters of democracy, on matters of security, on matters of economic development," she said.
