The Chilean government called on its inhabitants Thursday not to discriminate against 117 Palestinian refugees who will begin to arrive in early April from a refugee camp on the Iraq-Syria border.
The refugees, from 29 families who fled violence in Iraq, will be settled in Chile's La Calera zone, some 70 km north of Chile's capital Santiago and another three municipalities in the center of the country.
Deputy Interior Minister Felipe Harboe said the Palestinian refugees, including parents and children, want to live peacefully, and their backgrounds have been checked carefully.
"Those people will not pose any risk for our country," he said.
They will receive support from the government, the Catholic church and the United Nations' refugee agency, which seek homes for them and has contacted entrepreneurs in Chile's Palestinian community to help them find jobs, Harboe said.
Catholic priest Rodrigo Tupper said "once the Palestinian refugees overcome the language barrier, their integration is going to be easy." Source:Xinhua
