Brazil's Supreme Court ruled Thursday that it agreed to extradite Colombian drug lord Juan Carlos Ramirez Abadia to the United States to face racketeering charges.

But Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will have the final word on the extradition, which American officials has sought under a 2004 indictment.

Ramirez Abadia's Norte de Valle cartel allegedly shipped 550 tons of cocaine to the United States from 1990 to 2003.

It is reported that Lula can also require the drug lord serves his time here before being extradited if he is convicted of laundering money in Brazil.

Ramirez Abadia fled to Brazil four years ago after a drug conviction in Colombia and allegedly ran the cartel's money laundering operation here.

He had said he preferred to avoid charges in Brazil and begin confinement in the United States as quickly as possible.
