Italy and Chile have a good political, economic and cultural relationship, the two countries' presidents said Monday.
Italy's President Giorgio Napolitano, who began an official visit to Chile Monday, met with his counterpart Michelle Bachelet for an hour at the presidential palace, La Moneda.
"Chile represents a new strategic partner with which my nation seeks to deepen and extend the collaboration." The two nations "share the same vision of international relations: one based on peace, democracy and respect for human rights," he told the media at a joint press conference in Santiago.
"We are committed to dialogue and collaboration on the most controversial topics and on climate change," he said, adding that he seeks to put in place a new Italo-Chilean action plan.
Bachelet also agreed that the two nations shared the same vision of multilateralism and had an excellent relationship, demonstrated by the doubling of trade in the last few years.
She said the two presidents had discussed the recent Latin American crisis between Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela. But she believed that the crisis would be overcome by means of international law, peace and stability.
Their meeting also touched on the situation in the Balkans and the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean Summit in the Peruvian capital Lima in May.
Bachelet also expressed her support for Milan as the host city for the 2015 World Expo.
