Chilean police arrested 849 people during a nationwide crime crackdown on Monday and Tuesday, a government official said.
Nine guns, ammunition and drugs were also seized during the operation, the first of a string of government-led crackdowns on crime, Deputy Interior Minister Felipe Harboe said.
Most of the 849 suspects were arrested in the nation's capital, Santiago.
More than 1,000 policemen were involved in the operation in major cities to check suspicious vehicles and personnel, Harboe said.
The security situation has deteriorated in recent years in Santiago and many other places in Chile. Crimes such as company and bank robberies, house break-ins are frequently reported across the country. Source:Xinhua
