Nine inmates were killed and 20 others injured Friday when rival gangs fought each other in a prison in central Venezuela, the El Nacional newspaper reported Saturday.
More than 100 national guard and police agents were sent to help control the riot in the San Fernando de Apure lockup, said the report.
Violence is common in Venezuela's overcrowded and understaffed prisons, which have nearly 20,000 inmates.
Last year, some 500 inmates were killed and more than 1,000 others injured in riots and other violence, authorities said. Source: Xinhua
