A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale rocked northern Chile Monday, Chile's National Emergency Office said Monday, but there was no immediate report of casualties.
The quake struck at 5:40 p.m. local time (2040 GMT), and its epicenter was about 30 km north of northern Chile town Pica at a depth of 123.7 km, according to the University of Chile's Seismological Service.
The National Emergency Office said the power and telephone lines were cut off due to the tremor in Chile's northern port city of Iquique.
Northern Chile has been struck by earthquakes for several times in recent months. The largest one occurred on Nov. 14, 2007, when a quake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale killed two people and injured more than 110 others. Source:Xinhua
