The United States will keep its close cooperation with Pakistan after the country elected a new prime minister, the White House said on Monday.
"We look forward to working with the new government in Pakistan," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said of the government elected Monday by Pakistan's National Assembly, or the parliament's lower house.
"We've had good relations with them over the past; we hope that that continues," Perino said, adding there are "lots of different areas where we can cooperate, not just counter-terrorism, but across the board."
Yousuf Raza Gillani, vice president of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), was elected as new prime minister of Pakistan on Monday.
The PPP emerged as the largest party in the National Assembly in the general elections held on Feb. 18, some 50 days after its leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a suicide attack.
Pakistan, under the leadership of President Pervez Musharraf, has been a close ally of the United States on the anti-terror war since Sept. 11, 2001.
