The United States welcomed on Wednesday an announcement by French President Nicolas Sarkozy that France is to send more soldiers into Afghanistan to bolster an ongoing battle against a resurgent Taliban.

"Obviously that would be a very positive thing," U.S. national security adviser Stephen Hadley said of Sarkozy's announcement in London that Paris will propose bolstering its military presence in Afghanistan at a NATO summit next week.

Sarkozy did not provide figure of the forthcoming French military presence in Afghanistan. But it was reported that additional 1,000 French soldiers will be deployed in southern Afghanistan.

The United States and Britain have been strongly encouraging other NATO member states to commit more troops to the Afghanistan mission, where an upsurge in Taliban-linked violence has been reported in recent months.

Currently, France has 1,600 soldiers in Afghanistan.
