The remains of two U.S. contractors kidnapped in Iraq have been identified, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said Thursday.

FBI spokesman Richard Kolko told reporters that the two men were identified as Paul Johnson-Reuben of Minneapolis and Joshua Munns of Redding, California.

They were among a security convoy of Kuwait-based Crescent Security Group, which was ambushed in southern Iraq in Nov. 2006.

Six contractors were kidnapped in that attack.

Earlier this month, the U.S. military in Iraq received severed fingers of five of the men.

On Monday, the FBI announced that they had identified remains of Ronald Withrow of Roaring Springs, Texas, and John Roy Young of Kansas City, Missouri.

Forensic tests are awaited on the remains of the fifth person.

The other men still missing are Jonathon Cote, of Getzville, N.Y. and an Austrian.

But Cote's family said Wednesday that the body awaiting identification is not his.

The abductions threw new light on the lawlessness and corruption in Iraq's booming and scarcely regulated private security services.

On the day of the ambush, Crescent sent out seven guards to protect a convoy of 37 tractor-trailers and failed to register the mission with a ground-control center in Baghdad's Green Zone, which helps mobilize an emergency response in case of attack.

About 40 assailants, some wearing business suits, others in Iraqi police uniforms and masks, descended on the convoy after it stopped at a fake checkpoint.
