Visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte Thursday pledged multi-faceted approach in Pakistan's tribal region, and hinted talks with "reconcilable elements".

"The common ground that we all have in discussing the issue of how to deal with violent extremism in this country or elsewhere in the world is that it calls for a multi-faceted approach," said Negroponte at a news conference in the southern port city Karachi.

"There is no single solution," he said.

Negroponte said security measures obviously are necessary when dealing with irreconcilable elements who want to destroy people's way of life.

"I don't see how you can talk with those kinds of people," he said.

But Negroponte said there are reconcilable elements in the tribal region, "who hopefully can be persuaded to participate in the democratic political process."

Negroponte also emphasized a 150 million-U.S. dollar-a-year program to promote economic development in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), which he said can play a very importance role in dealing with the root causes.
