Canada should subjugate commercial hot-air balloons under the same safety standard as other passenger aircraft, the Safety Board of the Transportation Ministry said Thursday in a report.
The board also recommended balloons have an emergency fuel shut-off valve that could be deployed quickly during emergency situations such as hard landings.
The recommendations came after two hot-air balloon crashes in 2007 that saw two people killed and more than a dozen injured.
Two people were killed and 11 others injured during a crash in western British Columbia province in August 2007. A second crash in the same month in Manitoba province had a pilot and two passengers seriously injured.
If the suggested measures are adopted, it would significantly enhance the safety of passengers on commercial balloon operations in Canada, Peter Hildebrand from the Safety Board said at a press conference in Ottawa Thursday.
The Transportation Ministry will review the recommendations and decides whether to implement them, said Hildebrand. Source:Xinhua
