A prisoner was killed and another injured during a violent uprising that happened Saturday in a federal prison in Canada's western British Columbia province.

A number of inmates at Mountain Institution near Vancouver began breaking windows in the gymnasium just before 10 p.m. local time. They threatened staff at the facility and attacked other inmates, leaving one dead and another lightly injured, according to a news release put out Sunday by the Correctional Service of Canada.

The inmates were in the gym as part of their normal routine. Officials are still investigating whether the two men were targeted in the attack.

The facility is now under lockdown while staff clean up the aftermath of the disturbance and conduct a search of each cell. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating the incident.

Mountain Institution, located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver, houses 442 men serving a federal sentence of two years or longer.
