The White House has nominated William Burns to be the under secretary of state for political affairs and has sent the nomination to the Senate for approval, the White House said Thursday.

Former U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns, the third-highest diplomat in the State Department, announced his resignation in January.

William Burns, who is from the District of Columbia, has served as the U.S. ambassador to Russia and has been a career member of the Senior Foreign Service.
