U.S. President George W. Bush has taken a "consequential and historic trip" to Europe, during which he attended a NATO summit and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the White House said Monday.

"It was actually a pretty consequential and historic trip both to the eastern European nations and the NATO meetings in Romania and the meetings in Sochi," White House spokesman Tony Fratto told reporters.

"The president went into this trip where there were a lot of questions and a lot of those questions were answered," the spokesman said.

Following the NATO summit, Russia's outgoing President Putin hosted Bush Sunday in his presidential residence in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

The two leaders failed to reach substantial agreements on vital issues ranging from missile shield plans to NATO expansion although they agreed to continue dialogue to settle disputes and improve ties in a joint declaration issued after the one-day summit.

In his week-long European tour, Bush also visited Ukraine and Croatia in addition to his stay in Russia and the participation of the NATO summit in Bucharest, Romania.
