Floods triggered by downpours over the past weeks in northeastern Brazil have killed at least 36people and forced about 130,000 to leave their homes, reports here said Monday.
The federal government will release 613 million reals (about 317 million U.S. dollars) in emergency funding to relieve the victims, Minister of National Integration Geddel Vieira Lima told reporters Monday in Brasilia.
The federal government is considering extending agricultural insurance cover to protect farmers who have suffered losses, added the minister.
Seven states in northeastern Brazil have been severely hit by the floods. In the state of Paraiba, there have been 17 people reportedly dead and some 14,000 homeless. While in Piaui state, four people were killed and 57,000 have abandoned their homes. Source:Xinhua
