The UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) on Sunday urged Haiti to form a new cabinet as soon as possible after Haitian Prime Minister Jacques Edouard Alexis was dismissed in a no-confidence vote by the country's Senate Saturday.
MINUSTAH said in a statement Sunday that it will continue to support the reform of Haiti and Haitian President Rene Preval and develop constructive cooperation with the new cabinet, according to reports from Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince.
The food shortage and high cost of living in Haiti has triggered protests and clashes with police since April 4. Five people have died and over 60 others were injured in the crisis, which caused Alexis' dismissal.
After the Senate dismissed Alexis on Saturday, a United Nations peacekeeping soldier from Nigeria was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Port-au-Prince, bringing to six the number of deaths from the conflict between the UN peacekeeping mission and local rioters protesting soaring food prices.
The situation in Haiti has been worsened with food prices soaring 50 percent over the past few months.
