Floods caused 101 municipalities to declare a state of emergency, as 17,000 people were displaced in Paraiba, in northeastern Brazil, Brazilian media reported on Monday.

Heavy rainfall increased the flow of rivers in the region, and 10 bridges collapsed. 26 people were killed, 294 dams burst, six roads were blocked and another 30 were interdicted due to the risk of accidents.

The displaced families were taken to public buildings.

These have been the heaviest rainfall in 30 years in the northeast, known for its semi-arid climate. In Ceara state, 12 people died in the floods.

Meanwhile, in southern Brazil, gales of up to 178 kph caused destruction in the region, especially in the mountains of Santa Catarina state.
