The International Red Cross Wednesday expressed its concern about the humanitarian crisis affecting 1,400 people in northern Colombia, displaced from their rural homes by armed groups.

The two municipalities of Tierra Alta and Puerto Libertador in the northwestern Cordoba province are the hardest hit regions, the Red Cross' Colombian branch said in a statement.

The exodus of farmers from southern Cordoba is caused by Colombia's Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC) and new drug trafficking gangs, it said.

Farmers in the region have been threatened by antipersonnel mines placed by armed groups around their plots, it said.

Colombia is the second country, after Sudan, with the highest number of displaced people, according to reports released by the United Nations. Some 3 million people are displaced in Colombia.
