Colombian President Alvaro Uribe said Wednesday that he still believes that it is necessary to launch cross-border attacks against the Colombian rebel group FARC in Ecuadorian territory.
Uribe made the remarks when attending the World Economic Forum on Latin America in the Mexican resort of Cancun, saying that he does not regret launching an attack against a camp of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in Ecuadorian territory in March.
The move is necessary as the FARC has launched missiles to kill the Colombian soldiers, he said.
Uribe also said the four Mexican students killed during the raid on the camp collaborated in terrorist activities while Mexican President Felipe Calderon asked the Colombian president not to call the students collaborators until an investigation has concluded.
On March 1, Colombia launched a cross-border military attack against a FARC camp in Ecuadorian territory, killing 25 people, including four Mexican students.
Ecuador severed diplomatic ties with Colombia two days later in protest of Colombia's move, which also caused a diplomatic crisis in the region.
